London Stansted Airport News
New winter destinations from London Stansted Airport(22nd June 2006)
flyglobespan, which already flies to Tenerife and Athens from London Stansted, will be offering cheap daily flights to Chambery in the French Alps from December 2006. The web based airline, with flights from as low as £30 including taxes, hopes that the pricing and convenience of a destination closer to many of the French resorts will attract winter sports enthusiasts from London and the South East on short breaks.
A spokesman for flyglobespan, which is one of Britains fastest growing airlines based originally out of Glasgow and Edinburgh, said “Chambery is a very good destination for us. It is in an ideal location for some fantastic Alpine resorts and is attracting more and more skiers every year. Once skiers realised how close it is to certain resorts, it makes it the ideal gateway.”
flyglobespan’s new daily service from Stansted to France begins on December 23 and leaves the UK at 7.00am, arriving in Chambery at 9.45am. The return journey leaves France at 10.15am and touches down in the UK at 11.00am. flyglobespan expect the flights to continue beyond the winter and become part of their regular schedule.
New BAA owner may curtail Stansted expansion(12th June 2006)
Ryanair and Easyjet will be pleased to read a report in ‘The Business’ newspaper that the expansion of Stansted Airport will be curtailed under BAAs new owners, Ferrovial of Spain. The new owner have developed a less ambitious plan for Stansteds development and have indicated, in the offer document for BAA, that they believes ‘that this plan, together with its fresh approach to stakeholder consultation, will allow BAA to meet the needs of all stakeholders within the current regulatory framework.’
Essentially the low cost airlines believe that several of the components of the £2.7bn Stansted expansion could be done more economically. The buildings at the airport should, in their view, be functional rather than lavish. They also believe that the separation between runways, currently planned at 5kms, requires too much purchase of Essex farmland and compulsory purchase of housing developments.
Addition Security at Stansted Airport for World Cup Football Fans(9th June 2006)
Passengers from Stansted Airport should expect heightened security over the period of the World Cup as the police attempt to intercept troublesome football fans. The increased security should have little impact on holidaymakers but the police will be taking a closer than usual interest in groups of young men, particularly those travelling to Germany.
The first convicted hooligan was detained at Stansted Airport this Tuesday and convicted on Thursday. The hooligan, with three friends, tried to board a Ryanair flight to Frankfurt. Robbie Varle, a 20 year old trainee plumber from Bedfordshire, had an extensive history of criminal behaviour both with football related and other acts of violence. He was banned, at Chelmsford Magistrates Court from every regulated football match in England and Wales for the next 3 years.
A spokesman for Essex police who have responsibility for Stansted Airport said: "This case is an example of our zero tolerance approach. The message is, if you've got convictions for violence, don't try to go to the World Cup because we will stop you."
Stansted continues to develop public transport infrastructure(18th May 2006)
Stansted Airport is already the leading UK airport for proportion of passengers arriving by public transport.
Work on the new coach and bus station at Stansted, called the Public Transport Interchange, has now started. The new facility, costing £2.5 million, will replace the current facility and will have additional ticket desks, a larger waiting room and a coffee bar. The facility is designed to allow 5 million passengers per year to use the increasing range of bus and coach services that are being offered. The airport will be offering temporary facilities, including ticket office and waiting room, while the work is being undertaken
